9/22/2020 Happy Hobbit Day!In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit According to chapter one of The Fellowship of the Ring, two important hobbits--Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins--share a birthday on 22 September. The year that Bilbo turned eleventy-one coincided with the year Frodo turned thirty-three, and both of those birthdays were important ones in hobbit life. The account of that very famous party also appears in chapter one, "A Long-Expected Party." In celebration of this holiday, I hope that you'll take time to enjoy hobbit-y things today. Perhaps a walk in the woods (barefoot, if you're a bit daring), a second breakfast, or an unexpected party with friends? Or maybe just something that speaks comfort to you. Happy Birthday, Bilbo and Frodo! If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
9/18/2020 Fun Friday: Grant SniderI saw this piece on Grant Snider's site Incidental Comics and it made me laugh. And then engage in some introspection. And then laugh a bit more at myself. Have a lovely weekend, all. Enjoy the rain--if only for the good things it's doing for fighting raging wildfires.
9/3/2020 Very much a work in progressIn the not-too-distant future, this site will be a hub of information for Ashbrook families. Obviously, it's not quite there yet, so stay tuned for future developments. I appreciate your patience during the growing pains of this new endeavor. Categories |
